ICS Associate – North of Scotland

Back in the mists of time (the late 80s) I got involved in Social Care by first completing my nursing training at Woodlands and Ladysbridge Hospitals, where I met people living in settings and a culture that (even to a 19-year-old) felt like they were from a different century.

I joined the resettlement team at Ladysbridge helping plan people’s escape to the community, before moving to work for Partnership in the voluntary sector in 1992. In the intervening years, I have had a variety of roles involving supporting people, delivering operational management, leadership and development roles. Along the way, I have helped set up and co-facilitate Positive People, a group of people who represent views to the management at Inspire, contribute to writing and reviewing policies and offer training to people in recruiting staff.

I have also been involved in the development of a Public Social Partnership, and was part of a team bringing Project Search to Aberdeen.

More recently at C-Change as Engagement and Development Lead (Service Leader) I have done a lot of work around transforming traditional services, and co-ordinated a Dragons Den event involving a variety of stakeholders from different sectors, to support people with disabilities to develop social enterprises.

I have been part of the team planning and putting on Young Scotland’s Got Talent events in Aberdeen. I am also on the board of Values Into Action Scotland and I Connect North East, and am a long term member of the Learning Disability Group of Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire.

I have always been passionate about progress, and do what I can to contribute to new opportunities for people to have greater control and more options available to live fulfilling lives.

Having taken part in the In-Control leadership course a few years back and being involved with the Northern Network and I recognise the importance of the work In Control has done in moving forward expectations, and creating common understanding between providers and Local Authorities to work together on delivering real change.

I have a particular interest in risk enablement, and also change management. I plan and deliver training and facilitate development days both as an In-Control Associate and independently.
