Self Directed Support Option 2

Supporting local authorities and support providers to improve option 2.

Option 2 of self-directed support, where a person directs the support but someone else manages the budget for them, is sometimes described as ‘the best of both worlds’. Since the self-directed support legislation came into force, it has not been used as often, or as effectively, as people thought it might be.

In Control Scotland has worked alongside many local authorities, support providers, and supported people to tackle this, and in 2022 we published research on good practice in option 2.

This year, we are able to offer two projects:

  • Demonstration work: working alongside an organisation, our skilled and experienced team will look at a challenge in option 2, and coproduce a workable routemap for change. This might include looking at topics like processes, policies, commissioning practices, guidance, or how to increase practitioner confidence.

  • Action learning set for support providers: Providers play a pivotal role in the successful use of option 2, but their voices are rarely heard in national improvement. Last year, we published our findings from a series of focus groups with support providers  where they shared some of the challenges they face, and some of the opportunities they have explored.  This year, we will run an Action Learning Set of 5 sessions, delivered online, specifically for support providers. In these sessions participants will learn from each other and from guest speakers, share examples from their own experiences, and collaborate on change projects.
