Director Just Connections

I have just recently taken up the post of Director with Just Connections

Prior to my role with Just Connections, I led the ‘Change and Improvement project in Adult Learning Disabilities in Aberdeen City Council. The two main aims of the project were to increase the choice and control people have over their support arrangements.  Doing this in a sustainable manner, which means within the overall budget monetary budget and helping people making natural connections in their own community.

After qualifying as a social worker from Ruskin College Oxford in 1990 I worked alongside the National Development Team in supporting people with learning disabilities to move from long-stay hospitals to their own homes, through an approach known as ‘ordinary life’. I also hold a Masters Degree in Public Administration. Before qualifying, I started my career as a care assistant working in both the public and not-for-profit sectors.

I am also a founding board member of Manavodaya International UK. a people based development organisation promoting techniques developed in India for self help for disadvantaged people. Getting more control being based on the idea given the right facilitation, anyone regardless of their disadvantage or disability has the capacity to direct their own support, both paid and unpaid.

I am married with five children, Belle the cat  and a motorbike. Belle the cat being the one who takes up the most space at home!

I hold a view that people will find better solutions for themselves by having greater control over their support arrangements, building on and creating their own natural supports, the role of professionals is to facilitate people to get this greater control. This being at the heart of In Control Scotland’s work.
